Day 21 of Self-Reflection: Speech

“Misfortune comes from the mouth and ruins one; but, fortune comes from the heart and makes one worthy of respect.” Nichiren Daishonin

Words have immense power calling us to use them very wisely. Whatever we think has the power to influence us even if it is in an unhealthy direction. Whatever we say often manifests itself in our lives.

When we think about something we give it energy to grow. This does not mean that thinking things automatically brings them to bear fruit; but, it does mean the more we focus on a thought the more likely it is to become a part of our lives.

Speech is even more powerful than thought because it means that others are offering their energy by listening. Even if we speak a thought in the form of an idea and not a plan it could take on a life of its own.

Therefore, when we speak negative things aloud they impact our lives. For example, if we say to ourselves I do not know how to do one thing or another we cement our inabilities. If we say I do not know how to do that YET we make room for growth. Fortunate people realize the power of words and often check in with their hearts to ensure that they are setting themselves up to live the life they want. Awareness of what we say can help us focus on making positive changes.

JOURNAL PROMPTS
1. How aware are you of how you use language?
2. Are you at peace with the way you speak about your life even during difficult times? If not, what is one thing you can do to change this? If you are how do you manage to do this?

GUIDANCE
When I speak of using language wisely to make room for growth I am not speaking about positive affirmations. I am speaking about using self-talk to cultivate a spirit of growth and competence. Words have power that we use whether we are aware of it or not. I suggest that we endeavor to speak wisely since that brings about a life of value.
