Dear Reader,
The past couple of years have been filled with a variety of experiences for not just me but everyone. As we have made our way through a pandemic, I too have had to spend some time thinking about my place in the worldwide and local community. Since September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, I am taking a moment to acknowledge the reality of suicide still claiming lives due in part to some misconceptions and lack of access to quality mental health care.
Mental health is not a privilege but a right. This right may not be extended to those who do not have enough money or health insurance to be able to have consistent quality care. This is something that breaks my heart. I may not be able to do much, but I am holding out the hope that if we all do our parts it is possible for every to get the support they need and deserve.
The next week I will answer some questions I get asked most often when starting to work with a new client. “Shyra Shares” where you will get my professional view on what to expect in therapy, the power of words, diagnosing, medication and nutrition, mental health myths, Mental health in the Black community, the gift of hope, how to get the most out of a virtual session, and self-care. If you would like me to address a topic, feel free to make a comment or send me an email. At the end of “Shyra Shares” I will share a project I am working on so please come back for each share and to find out what it is.
Thank you in advance for your support!
Warmly,
Dr. Shyra
