SHYRA SHARES 7: HOPE

Dear Reader,

By the time one makes it to see me usually things are so out of control that the person and/or their loved one is so tired of trying to figure things out.  There can be a feeling of being disheartened and diminished hope.  My heart goes out to anyone who is willing to take that next step to bring about healing and change.

One of the first things I want to learn about is how much hope one has and if they are able to picture their lives without the feelings, thoughts, and/or actions they would like to change.  Without hope it can be difficult to do the difficult work of honestly engaging in therapy.  Sometimes the first sessions can be spent exploring and developing hope.

Activities Used to Foster Hope

  • Spend five minutes visualizing yourself after you have made the changes you would like to make.  This may be difficult at first but keep at it as it often becomes easier over time.
  • Write a letter from oneself after changes have been made to your current self.  What do you think you need to hear from the future you right now?
  • Learn about others who have overcome some of your difficulties.  This can be done by joining a social media group or support group.
  • Find your personal cheerleader.  We all have that one person who is convinced we are amazing so spend more time with them.  If you do not have any that come to mind look no further than your nearest therapist.
  • Make a list of your accomplishments.  I was told to do this by a mentor and found the idea helpful (no, I have not done this myself).

Without hope obstacles can feel pointless and insurmountable.  Therapy can be a place to come to develop it and take that next step into personal health and wellness.

Warmly,

Dr. Shyra
